Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT)

The Water Damage Restoration Technician course is designed to teach restoration personnel that perform remediation work to give them a better concept of water damage, it’s effects and techniques for drying of structures. This course will give residential and commercial maintenance personnel the background to understand the procedures necessary to deal with water losses, sewer backflows, and contamination such as mold.

This class is a 3 day class at $1,500.00 a day + expenses (USA) or $2,500 a day + expenses (International)

“Water Damage Restoration Technician” (WRT) course is an intensive 3-Day PowerPoint-driven Instruction, based on IICRC approved guidelines.

Sponsors and Course Design:

  • The WRT course can either be instructed as a “Private Class” or an “Open Class,” anywhere in the US, Canada, Australia, and other countries where the class can be instructed in English or interpreted in a foreign language.
    • A “Private Class” is one where students or individuals are from the same company, association, or they are sponsor selected.
    • An “Open Class” is one where students or individuals can apply to take the course from the sponsor, where the sponsor agrees to have the class marketed on the IICRC website.
  • Minimum costs for instructing an IICRC-WRT approved course through a sponsor is $1,500.00 a day + expenses (USA) or $2,500 a day + expenses (International) per person.

Course is Intended for:

  • Our 3-Day WRT course is for everyone (e.g., insurance adjusters, restorers, property managers, industrial and occupational hygienists, building engineers, laboratory technicians, medical doctors, attorneys) who require knowledge about water-related problems that occur in buildings experiencing pipe breaks, water damage from fire suppression systems, water backflows from sinks, and wastewater from toilets to broken wastewater lines. Resulting water damage can cause building occupant and worker exposure to mold, bacteria, viruses, and toxins.
  • When arriving, students receive a printed black and white manual, a study guide, and an electronic download of a 200 page water damage and microbial glossary.

Course General Description:

  • The WRT course addresses how buildings should be assessed from a hazard and risk management prospective; maintain open communication with all responsible parties; recognizing and addressing potential liabilities, including project limitations, complications, and complexities; using properly written contracts; establishing methods and procedures for protecting occupants in occupied buildings verses non-occupied buildings; completing an occupant and responsibly-party interview; documenting current building conditions through project completion; establish the Category of water impaction, including Category 1, 2 and 3; moisture monitoring and moisture mapping; extraction methods and equipment; establish drying goals based on the Class of Water, including Class 1, 2, 3, and 4; monitoring the health and safety of workers; protecting non-affected environments and contents from affected environments and contents; using third-party professionals, such as industrial hygienists to sample and analyze for asbestos, lead-paint, chemicals, mold, and bacteria, which is completed for collecting baseline data, during the project data, and post remediation evaluation/verification data; specialty equipment required to remediate and dry water damaged structures; processes involving remediation, including the containment and disposal of microbially impacted materials; processes involving cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing contents and ventilation systems; final cleanup and disinfecting workers and equipment.
  • Depending on student questions, the course is open to discussing additional issues such as identifying a small loss from a medium to a large loss, and structural interiors identified as total loss; addressing occupant complaints or concerns; remediating water damage in residential single-family buildings, verses multi-story structures and condominiums; complications in drying water that is bound in semi-porous materials; using advanced drying systems, such as hydronic, desiccant, and heat; complications and challenges working in shopping centers, office buildings, schools and hospitals, laboratories, to manufacturing and industrial buildings; the estimated time required to complete phases of work; contents inventory and packout; identifying total loss contents from salvageable items; mitigating or remediating attics and crawlspaces; using computer-based estimating, and time and material costs; working in community-wide disasters such as hurricanes.

WRT Course Cost:

  • Students attending an “Open Class,” is an “In-person Hands-on Course,” where the cost of the course per person is $1,500.00 a day + expenses (USA) or $2,500 a day + expenses (International).

IICRC Exam Requirements:

  • Students requiring WRT certification through IICRC, are not required to have attended a prior pre-requisite course. However, they must take the IICRC-WRT exam, and pay separately $80.00 (check or credit card) to IICRC for grading the exam.

Non-IICRC Completion Requirements:

  • Individuals successfully completing the WRT course for general information will receive a color and ready to frame “Certificate of Completion” through the Building Restoration Institute (BRI).
